September's
Mission of the Month

The ELCA's commitment to supporting people who live with chronic hunger and poverty around the corner and around the world is carried out by ELCA World Hunger through relief, development, education, and advocacy by:

* providing immediate relief for people affected by chronic hunger and poverty;

* assisting whole communities through long-term, sustainable development to help alleviate chronic hunger and poverty

* advocating for justice by changing laws and systems

* educating members of the ELCA in awareness of issues relating to hunger, poverty and justice.

Each of you must give as you have made up your mind,
not reluctantly or under compulsion,
for God loves a cheerful giver.
--2 Corinthians 9:7

August/September 2007 Project

HELP US COLLECT
SCHOOL KITS!

Last year we really had a BIG success with the school bags, so this year we are doing it again. Our goal is to complete at least 100 SCHOOL BAGS!

Carol Waggoner has some school bags and supplies left from teaching schools. She is now retired and is willing to donate what she has to this project. THANK YOU CAROL!

We have made a list of supplies needed for each bag and attached it to the school bag. The school bags will be available in the west hallway and the Fellowship Hall. We will need EVERYONE'S help to complete 100 school kits.

So watch for a display area where there will be someone handing out the school bag(s) to complete. You also have the option to put $5 in the envelope in the school bag and we will do the shopping to complete your school kits.

We would like all school bags returned by the end of September at the latest. Thank you for all your support of the Lutheran World Relief projects.

SUPPLIES NEEDED ARE:

Pads/notebooks of 8 ½ x11" paper (150-200 pages)
Safety scissors with blunt edges
Rulers with centimeter markings
Personal pencil sharpeners
Erasers approx 2 ½ inches long
New pencils with erasers
12 sheets of construction paper (in assorted colors)
Boxes of 8, 16, or 24 crayons

Bring complete school kits or supplies to the church.

WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!

Amazon, Barnes & Noble, L.L.Bean, Lands End, Cabelas, Eddie Bauer, Harry & David, and Yankee Candle Co. are just a few of the participating companies. Find out how to participate in this program at elca.org/hunger/howtogive/shop-give.html

Nebraska Lutheran
Outdoor Ministries
(NLOM)

All Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor Ministries programs are focused on building relationships. Through small groups, trained staff, quality facilities and teaching through experiential learning we are able to provide campers of all ages with the opportunity to serve in leadership roles, be part of a caring Christian community, and grow in self-confidence and self-reliance skills. Camp is for the camper and the NLOM staff always go the extra mile to be sure a camper is cared for and included.

ADOPT A CLINIC

The Zahanati Program of the NE Synod allows congregations to support the work of a dispensary in our companion synod of the Northern Diocese in Tanzania. These dispensaries provide a wide assortment of healthcare services to poor and very remote areas. We will be receiving more information about "OUR" dispensary--the name, location, and pictures.

The committment is for $2000 to $3000 a year, a small amount considering the lifegiving services provided. By raising another $1000 by the end of 2007, we will be giving full support to OUR dispensary. Consider Zahanati as an individual gift or fund raiser for your group.

The Benefaction Board has agreed to match up to $2000 a year to support a health/medical clinic in the Northern Diocese of Tanzania, a project encouraged by the Nebraska Synod.

"OUR" Adopt A Clinic!

St. John's sponsored 2 missionaries in 2006, Pastor Twila Schock and Kevin Axton. Pastor Schock is no longer doing her missionary work in Europe, but is now serving as the Interim Director of Europe & the Middle East Desk in the Chicago office. St. John's is now sponsoring Sister Ruth Ellen Rebelein who is serving in Papua New Guinea. Sister Ruth is currently teaching English as a second language at Senior Flierl Seminary. We also continue to sponsor Kevin Axton, who serves in Japan. He currently works as an English teacher and with Evangelism.

St. John's has committed $1500.00 sponsorship to each missionary for 2007. If you would like to give toward our missionary support you may include your offering in your regular envelope. Please designate your gift to "missionaries" and the amount of your gift. Your support of this worthwhile cause is most appreciated!

ELCA Domestic Disaster Response

As in past disasters, the ELCA Domestic Disaster Response will most likely include spiritual care for those affected by the disaster, care for caregivers, and hardship grants. Hardship grants are available to ELCA and other community members who need short-term assistance for expenses unmet by insurance or FEMA grants, such as rent, insurance deductibles, or special medical equipment. Your gifts to ELCA Domestic Disaster Response, will ensure that funds are available to be released immediately once community needs are assessed. All 100 percent of your gifts will go to help individuals and communities rebuild their lives following thE disaster.

Gifts to ELCA Disaster Response (designated for "Virginia Tech Tragedy") will support emotional and spiritual care for disaster survivors, caregivers and the campus community. Gifts to Lutheran Campus Ministry support our ongoing ministry at 187 colleges and universities.
